The Fall

3 Now the serpent^(A) was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?^(B)”

⁴ “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.^(A)

² Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord,^(A) that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.”^(B)

¹¹ They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die?^(A) What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt?

¹² Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!”^(A)

³ The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt!^(A) There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food^(B) we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”^(C)

⁷ and in the morning you will see the glory^(A) of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling^(B) against him. Who are we, that you should grumble against us?”^(C)

⁷ And he called the place Massah^[a](A) and Meribah^[b](B) because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

² All the Israelites grumbled^(A) against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in Egypt!^(B) Or in this wilderness!^(C)
